Assignments
Assignment One
For the first assignment I have decided That I would like to create Three figures. Two of the figures will be attached to one another. So, it will be actually be two separate pieces that communicate with each other. I want to create a story that is a political issue and hits close to home coming from an immigrant family and also having some understanding of why people flee Mexico. I want my piece to communicate or bring attention of families being separated at the border. To inspire empathy for Latinos at the border coming to America for a better life who get separated from their families. I want to create a scene with figures of a border patrol taking a child from her mother. Hand building the figures in a way to show the exchange of guardianship from mother to border patrol. With this project I want to learn how to work with making medium figure carving and sculpting techniques. I prefer neutral tones and raw clay because they promote this historical artifact vibe, but at some point I would like to work with color and see if there is a way I can have precise control with color application. The images I have provided below are works that I would like to take away from in some way to create the story.
Assignment Two
For my second the wall assignment I have decided to redo my clay tiles that romanticize field work. The idea behind this piece is to show the types of work not only that most hispanic immigrants are allotted but also jobs that i have worked in myself. The idea behind this tiles for me personally is as a reminder of where I came from and who I am. My intent is that other hispanics or people who have worked in the fields feel a sense of nostalgia. With this project I would like to play with Slips on this assignment perhaps get a color pallet. Most of this will be relief carving but I would like to incorporate slump molds to give the figures in the tiles appear to have a more 3d form
Assignment Three
For my third assignment i have decided to focus on how the mother is a vital role played in hispanic culture. Without mother we have nothing and in most cases our mother is respected and almost godlike. Mothers don't really get sympathy in our culture it seems that they actually have the task of nurturing, educating, and taking care of the entire family. An unrealistic expectations list falls upon mothers in hispanic communities so I have decided to create a deity like creature to represent the mother and her endless chore to grant wishes and remain strong. With this final piece i will be referencing ancient art and creating a hybrid mother creature nursing her offspring.
